I'm switching over to wordpress and my lovely husband is going to be hosting the website for me (thanks honey!!), so I bid you adieu, Blogger. I will not miss thee.
I can't post any more pictures (which is not ok with me) for the foreseeable future. I'm working on a solution to this problem, but until then, I'm on hiatus. I hear about some child being able to say specific words to indicate something, or how a child can walk by this point and I immediately think Evie's falling behind. It's the worst. It's like an involuntary response to which I have to mentally tell myself not to compare my child to others. I know rationally that my child is unique and that all children develop at their own pace and that, in the end, she will conquer all the milestones when she's good and ready. But it's been hard to rewire my brain to not jump to that comparison.

It's scary how much they look like each other.

Little Girl (because she's becoming less and less of a baby every day) just turned 9 months last week and there are some truly amazing things she can do and some really funny things too. For example, if I lay down on the floor and lift my shirt up, she immediately rushes over from where ever she was, drops what she was doing, to face plant into my belly. I assume she's trying to blow raspberries on my belly like I do to her when I change her diaper, but she can't quite blow out, so it's just an open-mouthed face plant. She also thinks it's really funny when someone sneezes.

But I still hear about babies who can say Dada and Mama to the correct parent at this age, or babies who are already walking and I can't help but think my baby is falling behind. How do you deal with not comparing your child (or yourself, or your marriage, etc.) to others?
Matt, Baby Girl and I are going camping on the beach at Carolina Beach, where you can drive right on to the beach! And we'll have some friends with us too. I'm pretty excited to try out our 4-whel drive for the first time. I just hope we don't get stuck! :)

It will also be the first time I've been to the beach this summer! How is that possible?! I suppose when driving for more than an hour or so doesn't jive with the little one, it makes it hard to go on trips... Any way, I'm really looking forward to watching Evie discover the sand! So far, the weather is looking pretty good and I can't wait!!
I'd used up some ingredients already and didn't want to go buy more because I had a ton of food in my fridge! I just needed something to make with it. Thus, this soup was born. It was raining on Monday when I made it and I knew I needed something that would make a ton so I could take the rest of it to a sister in our ward who just had a baby. Soup just sounded right, so I started assembling things I had on hand and I was pretty impressed with how it turned out! I didn't measure anything, so don't hold me to the amounts. I just did a little of this and a little of that until it turned out right, so you may have to tweak this to your personal tastes, but in the end , I know you'll love it!

Turkey Gnocchi Soup - Serves 12 (aka, make this in a BIG pot)

1 Stick of butter
1/2 cup of flour
6 cups milk
6 cups of chicken stock
Turkey breast, fully cooked, cut into big chunks
Big handful of shredded carrot
2 teaspoons of garlic powder
1 teaspoon of onion powder
1 lb. potato gnocchi
1 bag of frozen vegetables of your choice (I used peas and corn)
Seasoned salt and Pepper to taste

In a large pot on the stove, melt the butter and whisk in your flour. Cook the mixture over medium high heat for about a minute or two. Then, slowly whisk in your milk and chicken stock. Keep whisking until the soup thickens. Once the soup thickens, add your chopped turkey breast, shredded carrot, and garlic and onion powders and keep heating for about 10 minutes. Add the gnocchi and frozen vegetables and season to taste. Allow the gnocchi and vegetables to heat through and serve with some yummy bread!

Sorry I don't have a picture to show! All the leftovers went to feed the other family. But let me assure you, this soup won't last long in your fridge!
I'm not sure that there is. Lately, Baby Girl has taken to face-plant kissing any patch of my exposed skin. I *love* it. She's learned so many new things lately! It seems like she's doing something new everyday. Perhaps this is the reason she hasn't been sleeping lately.... Hmmm. Any way, I can't believe how big she is! Not too long ago, I read about a wonderful organization that takes fabric that would've been thrown away (because it was not in season or was being discontinued, not because it was defective or gross) and uses it to make quilt kits. These kits are used by people (like me!) to make quilts for kids in the hospital who are very sick or have been through some incredible trauma.

So, I signed up to make one, even though I've never made a quilt before. I was just so moved by this organization's mission that I told myself I'd learn, and even though it might not be pretty, it would be made with love.

So, while watching the Olympics in the evening, I assembled this quilt. Thus, the Olympic Quilt.

I am so proud of it. It's not perfect. Far from it, but I did everything on my own, without help (that is, as long as you don't count youtube). Usually when I do a sewing project I run to my mom or my sister for help, because they are WAY better than I am. But this time, I couldn't run to them. They were unavailable. So, I was stinkin' proud of myself for putting on my big girl panties and trying something new.

Now, I don't think I'm sold on the idea of quilting as a hobby, but it's nice to know the skill for the future. And in the process, I produced a wonderful quilt for someone.

Before I sent it off, I had everyone in the family give it a great big hug so that it would be full of love for the next person. I really hope this quilt can comfort a child who needs it.

If you're interested in making a quilt too, you can go here and request a kit. And if you need help putting it together, I can help! I know how! ;)
They ran 10 miles. I ran 9. But, to date, it's the farthest I've ever run in one go. And while I was pretty sore that day (I literally felt like my hips were going to snap apart), I was surprisingly not sore on Sunday. I mean, my calves and quads were tight, but not sore.

Which leads me to wonder if humans were really designed to be able to run for long distances. I mean, back in ye olde days where all we had were our wits and a sharp stick, we had to be able to distance ourselves from the predators that might think a McHuman nugget would be a tasty snack.

But on that same vein, didn't the guy who ran the original marathon die afterwards? So we definitely can't go on forever. And then there's guys like Usain Bolt who can run stupid fast. So, what are humans best at, physically speaking? Thoughts?
I've got my DVR set to record every minute of it! I don't even dream that I'll watch all of it, but I want to be able to turn on the TV and have it on immediately. I'm so proud of all the athletes that have been performing their best and I just love seeing what the human body can accomplish!

The surprising thing of this year's games has been how much I haven't really cared who was winning. Normally I am so Team USA, but this year I have just been happy to watch the joy on the faces of the winners, regardless of nationality. Of course, I'm rooting for Team USA, but I'm not mad if we lose.

My favorites athletes for these games have been Allison Schmitt and Danell Leyva. Allison is so positive and bubbly, it's hard not to like her. And Danell Leyva had an amazing comeback, jumping from 5th to 3rd place in only two events. Amazing. And to see him with his Dad is just touching!

But all that aside, I think watching this year's Olympic Games has motivated me to train a little harder. Who says I couldn't do that? I don't ever think I'll ever have a desire to compete on the international level at anything (except maybe couch surfing or baby kissing), but who's to say that I couldn't compete in my races or any chosen sport to the best of my ability. No one. And it's made me want to strap on my shoes, throw the kiddo in the jogging stroller and go all out crazy with my running! I think that coupled with the fact that I clocked my fastest 5k pace since high school (11:20 min/mile) the other day really have got me excited again about TYR. So here's to the next 14 weeks of training and gettin' my run on!
It had velvet on the inside, so it wouldn't slip off your head. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to have those little wispies floating in your eyes while you're running or exercising. Likewise, it's annoying to have to readjust a headband mid-workout. So when I discovered these headbands, I was over the moon. I went to the store and bought another one, but was a little taken aback when I saw how much they were charging (14.95). When I looked at the headband, all it seemed to be was a pretty ribbon on top, velvet ribbon on the back and an elastic. So, I set out to make one of my own.
I think they turned our pretty great and seriously, you can head bang in these and they won't budge. You should definitely think about making yourself one! You don't even need to use them for exercising! You could put it in your hair in the morning and not have to fiddle with it for the rest of the day.

All you need is:

Spool (or spools!) of a ribbon you like (I wouldn't use a sheer, but everything else seems to work pretty well)

At least 15 inches of velvet ribbon in a coordinating color (if you're having a hard time finding velvet ribbon in your local craft store, you can find some here)

1/4 inch braided elastic (at least 6 inches)

Coordinating thread

To start off, measured out all of my pieces. My headband ribbon ended up being around 14.5 inches and my elastic was about 6, but measure the ribbon around your head from behind one ear to the other. Stretch out the ribbon in the back to your comfort level. Mine ended up being around 6 inches. If you're unsure about your measurements, leave a little extra and you can adjust it later.

Next, fold the ends of both the ribbon and the velvet about a quarter of an inch under so you have a nice finished edge when you're done. Sew those ends under so you don't have to worry about them popping up later. You don't have to do this step, but I find the going easier later on if you do it.

Then, pin the velvet to your ribbon and slide the elastic into one of the ends and pin. Sew a down one side, around the bottom where you've pinned the elastic and up the other side. Stop at the corner, and slide the elastic into the pocket between the ribbon and velvet. Sew across the last side. Try on your headband to make sure it fits. If you need, pick out the stitches and adjust your elastic and sew it back in. Back stitch over the elastic once you've got it just right to really anchor it in there on both ends and then you're done!
I wake up with Evie, play with her all day and then go to bed and do it all again. I've had no motivation to do anything crafty or try to finish organizing my craft space downstairs. Currently it's a mess and I just can't seem to get motivated to do something about it. I think a large part of that comes from my tiredness (all I want to do is sleep... don't judge). And part of it comes from the fact that I just haven't figured out how to balance being a mom and loving on my little girl with the day to day upkeep on the house. Currently, the house gets progressively dirtier and dirtier until Matt starts really complaining about it or we have someone coming over and then I clean like crazy. I look at all the other moms who seem to have it all figure out and wonder how they got there. Part of me thinks I'll never get there and I'll just have to live in a dirty house, but part of me thinks there's some secret that I'm missing. Oh well, I suppose I'll figure it out eventually.

On an unrelated note, I noticed I haven't posted any recipes lately and thought I should share this one (it's a good one too!) that I got from my Uncle Scott. I love this salad! I would never have thought they herbs de provence would work in something like this, but it does. It's really scrumptious! I know you'll love it!

Avocado Black Bean Salad

Juice and zest 1 lemon
Salt and pepper
1 tsp herbs de provence
1/4 cup olive oil

2 avocados coarsley diced (make dressing first, add avocados first to prevent browning)

1 - can black beans
1 - can whole corn
Drain and rinse beans and corn. Allow to drain well. ( should be as dry as possible) Add to dressing.

1/4 to 1/2 red onion, sliced as thin as possible. Cover with water in
shallow bowl, add 2 tbsp sugar, stir, let sit for at least 30 min.

I need a vacation from my vacation! We were in Canada for 13 days. And it was wonderful! It was so nice to see all of my cousins, aunts, uncles and grandpa, especially since I haven't seen most of them for close to 10 years!

First, let me say that I and *so* proud of my little girl. She was a champ on the flights up and on the first leg of our trip home. The last flight was late and there was a maintenance problem with one of the door hatches so we were stuck sitting in the plane in Dallas, with 100 degree heat, a VERY full flight and no AC for quite a while. Evie was sweating and uncomfortable, so of course she was going to make it known to the world. I don't blame her one bit. Any way, she charmed all the people around her eventually, so I think they all forgave us.

Any way, I just loved the time we spent visiting family in Calgary, Lethbridge and Cardston. And I loved that I could introduce Evie and Matt to my side of the family. The only thing that could possibly have made the trip better was if my brother and sister could've been there with us. And being around all of my family makes me wish (only a very little bit, mind you) that we lived in Canada.

I didn't take as many pictures as I should've of my extended family, but I didn't want to spoil any moments with the flash of my camera. My family just isn't candid photos takers. We do some obligatory family pictures, but never do we snap photos while we're talking, or hanging out. I think it's just that we want to focus fully on the conversation and company, rather than think about taking pictures. Oh well. Of course I did take quite a few pictures. I think I maybe have found my favorite thing to photograph though: flowers. Any way, I'm going through the photos and picking my favorites (it's been really hard!!) and I'll upload them soon. I'm just so glad to be back!
I'm back and I'm working on sorting through pictures and writing up a post about my trip to Canada. I had so much fun and loved spending time with my family. My only regret is that we had to come home to 100+ degree weather. Bleh. But I suppose it's only natural following the uber mild winter we had. Here's hoping that the heat doesn't melt me completely!
We were running and walking in honor my mom, who was diagnosed with breast cancer this past December. So far, everything with her treatment is going well and I hope it continues to be so, but in the meantime, we helped to raise money for the Susan G. Komen foundation.
Megan and Greg went camping for the first part of the weekend and then joined us on Sunday. We had so much fun having almost all the family there. If only little brother could've come, it would've been a perfect weekend.

Any way, I actually remembered to bring the camera AND take pictures! I was so proud of myself. :)
And this past weekend, we traveled to Charlotte to participate in a
friend's baby blessing. Unfortunately, we were running late and as we
walked in the doors of the building, we heard, "Our Father in Heaven..."
I was so sad and embarrassed that we didn't get there in time! I always
underestimate how much extra time is needed to get ready, especially
now that I have to get me and Evie ready.

Any way, there
was a great little shindig after church with the family and it turned
out to be just a beautiful day. And of course, Matt made his best batch
of ice cream ever and I could only have a tiny spoonful. I was so bummed
I couldn't immediately shovel more in my mouth. Seriously, this no
dairy thing can be such a drag sometimes. Any way, we had a wonderful
time with our friends.
WHAT?! It feels like the last three months have flown by! I remember feeling like those first two months would never end and now I keep wish time would slow down a little. So far, 4 months has been my favorite. She learned how to roll over, both ways, she started sitting up unassisted for a few seconds, she's realized there's a whole big world out there and she just loves to stare at Truman and try to grab his fur (so far he's been very tolerant of her tugging). She's said her first word (Mum-mum) and uses it to get my attention (said in a continuous mum-mum-mum-mum-mum), had her first laugh and is so fascinated by everything around her. It's like being able to discover new things right along with her.

And as her Mother's Day present to me, she cut her first tooth last night. I could not believe it when I felt her gums this morning as she chewed on my finger. I thought maybe I'd caught her gum with my nail at some point, but no! It's her first tooth! Bottom left! Craziness!

And today's been a day of firsts! Not only did she get her first tooth, but she has her first solids today (no, we did not plan for it to coincide)! We started with some applesauce and she LOVED it. Of course, this makes total sense to me considering that she gets apple juice everyday (the only way we can get her reflux medicine in her. I'm not just giving my daughter juice willy nilly) and slurps it down as fast as she can. In a few days, I'll try the rice cereal and see how that goes. We got a video of her having her first solids and I'll try to figure out how to upload it when I can. Any way, here's some pictures from the last few weeks!
Sometimes I think I should go back and get my music degree because it's about as useful as my nutrition degree (in terms of me getting a job after college), but sometimes I think I should've gone to culinary school or animal sciences with the end goal of being a vet. But mostly, I think about how much it would cost for me to do any of those things and I lie down until the urge passes.

2. What is your go to outfit when you want to look good, and you're in a hurry?
None of them? I don't really have a lot of clothes that fit me just right any more. Dang pregnancy. I mostly end up crying on Sunday because I can't wear my sweats to church like I do every other day of the week.

3. If you could only watch one tv show over and over, what show would you pick?
Oooh, tough call. I'd have to say either Arrested Development or Gilmore Girls. Arrested Development just gets funnier and funnier every time I watch it and Gilmore Girls has always had a special place in my heart.

4. What's your favorite book, or the first that came to mind?
For a long time it was The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, but now I think it's probably Twilight. HA HA HA HA HA! I couldn't even write that with a straight face. But no seriously, my favorite book is usually whatever I'm reading at the particular moment, but I've always loved Jane Austen anything.

5. If your life had a theme song what would it be?
Not sure, but it would most likely be a super campy show tune.

6. Who is someone you miss having in your life (from moving away, passing away, just busy whatever)?

This is a tough question to answer without saying names (because I'm pretty sure they read my blog), but suffice it to say, they were once in my life in a very big way and now they aren't, even though they are still near by. I miss being able to talk about everything and anything with them and for a long time I was lost without them. I think I'm finally figuring out how not to have a best friend (outside of my marriage. Of course Matt is in my BESTEST friend) and be ok with that.

7. Would you rather be tired for the rest of your life or hungry?
I have been perpetually both for about 5 months, so I would definitely say tired. I can push through the tired, but I can't handle the hunger.

8. Who is someone you admire and would like to emulate?
I truly admire anyone who has grace under pressure. I feel like I can pull it together if I have time to prepare, but put me on the spot or under a stressful situation and I get flustered, upset and usually start to tear up a little. I've always wished I could be confident in my ability to speak and be able to come up with just the right thing to say on demand. I feel like Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail, where she explains that she can never come up with zingers until after the fact. I feel like that ALL the time, but not just zingers. It's everything. I usually just end up saying something awkward and then feeling like an idiot.

9. What is your favorite game?
What are we talkin' here? Board? Card? Party? Camp? The answers to that are: Quelf (with the right crowd), Nerts or Ligretto (same thang, different name), love your neighbor *awesome!!) and glow-in-the-dark tag.

10. If you had to leave your home forever and could only take a few "valuables" what would you take?
It's funny, I asked Matt this after thinking about it and it was interesting to compare his answers to mine. I would bring (assuming I've already gotten the baby) the laptops (they've got all the pictures), Truman, and depending on the circumstances, my piano or flute. He would bring the phones, important documents, laptops, checkbook and Truman. So practical.

11. What grocery item do you regularly splurge on?
I usually splurge on fresh produce or anything organic. If you'd asked me 6+ months ago, I would've said ice cream. Unfortunately, Baby Girl has put an end to dairy for me and I've found after all this time, I don't miss it all that much.

When I went to buy the tickets for the Ben Folds concert, the price had jumped from $25 to $55. I like Ben Folds and the NC Symphony, but I don't like them THAT much. :) So, we scrapped the concert and just went to the Peak City Grill instead. We didn't take any pictures, but the food was pretty delicious and it was pretty much just us in the restaurant (we went on our anniversary which happened to land on a Monday - 7 years? When did I get so old?).

And for April, we did pretty much the same thing! Ack! We're off to a bad start! Well, we were supposed to go strawberry picking and then come home and make jam, but our produce box had six quarts of organic strawberries for so cheap, I just ordered them. Unfortunately, the strawberries went bad before I could find somewhere with canning supplies in stock. It broke my heart to throw away 6 quarts of strawberries. But, that's what I get for wait to the last minute to find what I needed.

Any way, so for our April date, we again just went out to dinner. We went to a local place called The Chef's Palette. It. was. auh-mazing. The atmosphere was interesting. The walls were covered (I mean, literally COVERED) in local artists work. There were all different styles and subjects represented on the walls and made for some interesting dinner conversations. But the food was wonderful and fresh! Every bite was truly glorious. I think I'm going to to try to deconstruct their lemon poppy seed dressing from my incredible roasted apple, strawberry and candied walnut salad. Any way, it was nice to get away for an hour or two, but I was definitely ready to come back to the little one!

Well, I will promise that this next month's date will actually happen as scheduled and that we'll have pictures to go along with it!
I chalk this up to her reflux (which took two months to diagnose) getting the better of her and disrupting her sleep. But by the time we got her on medicine and she was feeling better, we'd already started bad sleep patterns and have been perpetuating them for a while.

As of now, baby girl cannot fall asleep on her own. She either has to be in her swing, in the car, nursing or screaming at the top of her lungs in order to fall asleep. I wouldn't mind letting her sleep in the swing if it was smaller and more portable (bringing that swing with us to the beach was not fun. Yes, we brought her swing with us. Don't judge) but it's really hard to get any sleep when Baby Girl is waking up every hour and a half or 2 hours and fidgeting all night. And there are more reasons for wanting to sleep train, but now the time has finally come to execute the plan.

After researching a few different methods, I've decided to try the "Pick up/Put down" method outlined in Tracy Hogg's book The Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. In essence, you do your bed time routine and then put your baby to bed in her crib while she's still awake. When your baby cries, you come in pick her up, calm her down and as soon as she's calm, you put her right back down. You do this every time she cries until she falls asleep on her own. Tracy Hogg mentions that you may have to repeat this cycle.. a lot, but that usually within a few days, they've figured it out and can put themselves to sleep.

I liked this method because it doesn't allow for the Evie to cry very long, therefore not letting her feel like she's been abandoned. It also allows us to start training her to fall asleep on her own, without having to hear my baby crying for more than a few minutes (which I can't handle). The drawback of this method is that it is very labor intensive on the parents for the first few nights. That's why we're starting this on Friday night, so we don't have many things we have to do and can get in naps during the day.

Any way, if anyone else out there has done some sleep training, I'd love to hear about your experiences!
We love to just get up and go somewhere for a weekend. Before I got the calling of ward organist and Beehive's adviser, we would often spend the weekends in Charlotte or even head up to Blacksburg. We we would usually call two or three days in advance and then stay with friends. I loved traveling like this and thought my travelin' days were done once we had the baby.

Happily, I was wrong.

Matt decided Monday of last week to take some time off. And on Wednesday, we decided to head to the beach. Unfortunately we had obligations on Sunday at church and I promised my sister we'd come for Easter dinner, so we weren't able to stay the WHOLE weekend. We drove down on Thursday and stayed in a hotel at Carolina Beach. The hotel was lovely, but the weather didn't want to cooperate. It was really chilly and rainy the whole time at the beach and I hadn't packed for chilly for myself or Baby Girl. So Thursday and Friday were mostly miserable (in terms of weather), but it cleared up a little on late Friday so we were able to go for a quick walk on the beach (it was still cold).

We got some great pictures and introduced Baby Girl to the love of her life: the beach. :) We stuck her toes in the sand and she didn't immediately hate it. I take that as a good sign. Any way, we got some great pictures at the beach and at the aquarium in Ft. Fisher. And even though the weather was rotten, it was still nice to just get away for the weekend.
I finished my first 5k in The Racing Year (or TRY is it will henceforth be known). I ran it in 43:44 at an average pace of 14:06 minutes. I am so happy with that! I shaved two minutes off my normal pace (yes, I was "running" a 16 minute mile and no I'm not ashamed of that...ok, so maybe a little ashamed) and I was able to finish with a smile on my face (as opposed to the last race I ran...) And I was able to run the whole thing! I had planned on run/walking, but I was able to mentally push myself to keep going. I've heard it said that running is a mental game, and I think I finally understand that now.
Any way, the morning was beautiful and the bands were rockin'! It was actually nice how the bands were set up. As soon as you were far enough away that you couldn't hear one, you could just start hearing the next. One band was even playing my jam - Buddy Holly by Weezer. And, as an added bonus, I was able to hear the birds singing their morning songs. It was actually very nice. I think I may have to run in the morning without the headphones more often. Not every time, mind you...

Matt was super supportive and thankfully Baby Girl slept almost the entire time! I was amazed that we were able to change her diaper, get her dressed and put her in the car seat without her waking up at all. Man, we must be real parents now! :)
So, for my next race in May, I plan on trying to shave another minute off my mile in addition to having a smile on my face at the finish line. :) I'm still looking for my May 5k, so if anyone is interested in running circles around me, let me know!
